Shaping better futures through a strategic approach to skills development

Why join us
Essex County Council (ECC) has an ambitious agenda to improve the quality of life for all people in Essex. Through our Everyone’s Essex strategy, we’re addressing four key areas: the economy, the environment, supporting our children and families, and promoting health, care and wellbeing for all ages.

Our adult skills and employability agenda underpins our commitment to create a strong, inclusive and sustainable economy, to level up the places and cohorts across the county, and to make lifelong learning a reality for our residents.

Your role
As our new Head of Employability & Skills, you could drive forward this important work, enabling increased prosperity, quality of life and wellbeing. From tackling climate change through green skills development to supporting post-16 pathways, you can expect to meet diverse challenges across the county. We’ll look to you to shape and lead the strategic framework for skills and employability, to address skills shortages by commissioning interventions, and to help residents into the growth sectors of the future. Success will depend on your ability to generate insightful recommendations and to build strong collaborative partnerships both locally and nationally.

About you
A dynamic and strategic leader, with excellent analytical skills, you’ll have a good understanding of both the local and national skills agenda. You’ll be capable of nurturing collaborative relationships, creating partnerships across the public and private sectors, and bringing diverse perspectives together to achieve great outcomes. You should have experience of turning research data into useful business insights and will need a good understanding of the impact of digital technologies on government services and the wider economy. Your passion to innovate will be matched by an ability to think creatively and communicate inspirationally.

We’re proud to offer an excellent benefits package to all our employees, including a local government pension, flexible working arrangements, generous annual leave and a range of discounts and loans.
